Function, form and confidence: the three goals of surgical andrology
Andrology is the branch of urology concerned with male sexual and genital health. Surgical andrology treats conditions affecting erections, penile anatomy and quality of life, ranging from erectile dysfunction that has not responded to medical treatment to penile curvature caused by Peyronie’s disease and buried penis.
Penile prostheses
Implantation of an inflatable or malleable penile prosthesis when erectile dysfunction has not responded to medication or other treatments, as well as revision of existing implants. Dr Etcheverry also performs this work at Bellvitge University Hospital.
Peyronie’s disease
Surgical correction of penile curvature when it makes sexual intercourse difficult or impossible. Treatment may involve plication, grafting or a penile prosthesis, depending on the degree of curvature and erectile function.
Buried or trapped penis
Release and reconstruction of a penis concealed by surrounding tissue, scarring or weight changes, with the aim of restoring urinary and sexual function and improving comfort.
Functional genital reconstruction
Treatment of complications following previous surgery or trauma affecting the penis or scrotum, including testicular prostheses. Where required, this forms part of complex genital reconstruction.

Is a penile prosthesis noticeable? Will the result look natural?
Visually, the implant is discreet and the external appearance changes very little when the penis is flaccid. It may feel somewhat different from natural erectile tissue. With an inflatable prosthesis, the erection can be activated and deactivated using a discreet mechanism. During consultation, you will receive a clear explanation of what to expect.
Will a penile prosthesis affect sensation or orgasm?
No. The prosthesis replaces the erectile mechanism, while sensation, ejaculation and orgasm remain as they were before surgery.
When should Peyronie’s disease be treated surgically?
Surgery may be appropriate once the condition has stabilised and the curvature makes penetration difficult or impossible. Surgery is not usually indicated during the active phase; the timing is determined during specialist assessment.
How long is recovery after penile prosthesis surgery?
As a general guide, most patients return to normal daily activities within a few weeks and resume sexual activity after four to eight weeks, depending on the technique and their recovery. You will receive an individual aftercare plan.
